Human trafficking in Germany reached record levels in 2024, with at least 868 cases officially documented. More than half of the victims came from West African countries, highlighting the international scope of the crisis. Experts believe the true number of cases is far higher, as many victims remain silent due to fear, stigma, or legal complications.
Authorities reported that most trafficking cases were linked to sexual exploitation and forced prostitution, leaving women disproportionately affected. The rise in cases was also reflected in the courts. In 2024, 650 trafficking-related trials were underway and 576 cases were concluded, a significant increase compared to previous years.
Among foreign nationals, Chinese citizens were the most frequent victims of sexual trafficking, followed by people from Bulgaria and Romania. Researchers noted that trafficking victims in Germany come from diverse backgrounds. One third were non-EU nationals, another third were citizens of EU member states, and the remaining third were German nationals.
The figures reveal that trafficking is not only a problem affecting migrants but also a growing threat to local citizens. Experts argue that Germany must strengthen prevention strategies, expand victim protection programs, and deepen international cooperation to combat the networks behind these crimes. They also stress the importance of raising public awareness, as traffickers exploit both vulnerable migrants and citizens alike.
The surge in cases underscores the urgent need for stronger enforcement and broader social support systems. Without these measures, the hidden scale of trafficking in Germany will continue to grow, leaving countless victims without justice or protection.
