Germany Plans to Build Europe’s Strongest Army by 2035

Germany has announced ambitious plans to establish Europe’s most powerful military by 2035, embarking on a major restructuring effort in response to potential threats from Russia and shifting U.S. security policies.

According to CNN, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz declared earlier this year his intention to rebuild the country’s long-neglected armed forces into Europe’s leading military power. Achieving this goal, however, will require overcoming decades of underinvestment and structural challenges.

The recruitment process will initially be voluntary, with new soldiers offered a starting monthly salary of €2,600 an increase of €450 compared to current pay. If quotas are not met, the government will have the authority to enforce mandatory conscription. Beginning next year, all 18-year-olds will receive questionnaires asking about their willingness to join the army. For men, completing the form will be compulsory. By 2027, mandatory health checks will also be introduced for 18-year-old males.

Germany’s initiative comes at a critical moment, with the war in Ukraine ongoing and the United States urging Europe to take greater responsibility for its own security.
