Australia’s Georgia Voll came tantalizingly close to making history in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) by becoming the first batter to score a century, finishing her innings on 99 not out for UP Warriorz against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Lucknow.
In a spectacular display, Voll struck 17 fours and a six during her 56-ball effort, contributing to a formidable total of 225 runs for her team. She formed a solid opening partnership with compatriot Grace Harris, who added 39 runs, as they put together a 77-run stand.
Voll’s performance equaled the highest individual score in the WPL to date, showcasing her talent and determination. Despite her efforts, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, featuring notable Australians including Ellyse Perry, Georgia Wareham, and Kim Garth, were ultimately dismissed for 213 runs in the final over.
In addition to her batting prowess, Voll demonstrated her fielding skills with two catches and took on the challenge of bowling the last over. She made a crucial run-out, removing Renuka Singh after just three balls.
Reflecting on her near-miss for a century, Voll admitted, “I think I did [miss out on a golden chance].” Facing England’s Charlie Dean on the final delivery, she managed only a single, acknowledging, “I should have known she would bowl that [yorker].”
Voll’s impressive debut in the WPL came just last month when she stepped in as a replacement for Sri Lanka’s Chamari Athapaththu.
Meanwhile, Perry started strong for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, scoring 28 runs off her first 14 balls and becoming the season’s top scorer with 323 runs. However, her innings ended when she was bowled by Anjali Sarvani.
The result eliminated Royal Challengers Bengaluru from the title race, while the UP Warriorz had already missed the playoffs. Next week, Meg Lanning’s Delhi Capitals and Ash Gardner’s Gujarat Giants will compete for a place in the finals alongside the Mumbai Indians.
