Once a bustling junction for factory workers and commuters, Chandana Chowrasta in Gazipur has now earned a darker reputation as a hotspot for violent muggings and organized crime. The recent murder of journalist Asaduzzaman Tuhin has cast a chilling spotlight on the area’s descent into lawlessness.
Tuhin, a staff reporter for Dainik Protidiner Kagoj, was brutally killed by a gang led by the notorious Ketu Mizan and his wife Golapi. Even after the murder, Mizan showed no remorse. As he was escorted to court, he brazenly threatened journalists, underscoring the gang’s audacity.
Police have arrested eight individuals linked to the crime, including suspects from Pabna, Khulna, Cumilla, Sherpur, and Mymensingh. The gang, operating under the guise of sex workers, lures unsuspecting pedestrians and travelers into secluded alleys near the abandoned Basan Union building and Jagrat Chourangi. Once trapped, victims are robbed often violently.
Authorities report that the gang has at least 29 criminal cases against them, ranging from murder and rape to drug trafficking and theft. Mizan alone faces 15 separate charges.
Locals say over 400,000 people pass through Chandana Chowrasta daily workers, students, and families all potential targets. Mobile phones are the gang’s primary prey, snatched from hands or bus windows while victims are distracted. Despite the frequency of these incidents, most victims never file police reports.
In one harrowing case on February 24, armed robbers stopped an ambulance carrying a deceased man in Telipara and looted the passengers. Just days earlier, a family traveling to Dinajpur was similarly attacked at the same intersection.
Tuhin’s death is more than a tragedy it’s a wake-up call. As fear grips the streets, many are asking: is public safety in Gazipur just a promise on paper?
