Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) have revealed that Mufti Mohammad Mohebbullah Miaji, 60, who was reportedly rescued in chains from Panchagarh last week, fabricated the entire abduction story.
At a press conference on Tuesday, Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations) Mohammad Taherul Haque Chauhan said investigators found no evidence to support Mohebbullah’s claims. “According to the description he gave of the alleged abduction including the time and place we examined CCTV footage from those areas but found no evidence of any such incident. He had chained his own legs and was lying on the ground. What he stated after being rescued was completely made up,” Chauhan said.
Mohebbullah, the khatib (chief cleric) of T&T Colony Jame Mosque in Tongi, had filed a case on October 24 alleging that he was abducted two days earlier. In his complaint, he claimed an ambulance intercepted him during a morning walk, that he was blindfolded, assaulted, and later abandoned in Panchagarh, where locals found him in chains and alerted authorities.
However, CCTV footage contradicted his account. Investigators tracked him arriving at Panchagarh’s last bus station late on October 22, walking near government offices, and later moving into a dimly lit area. Police said he appeared unwell, urinated by the roadside, removed his own clothes, and then tied a chain around his leg before lying down.
“When he woke up, he found himself at Panchagarh Sadar Hospital,” police said, adding that his incoherent speech at the time suggested mental disorientation.
Authorities confirmed that no abduction took place and that Mohebbullah had staged the incident himself.
