From A-League Star to Socceroos Contender: Nicolas Milanovic Eyes World Cup Glory

2 min read

Having cemented his status as the A-League’s best player by claiming the Johnny Warren Medal, Nicolas Milanovic is now setting his sights higher on making a lasting mark with the Socceroos. The 23-year-old attacking midfielder, fresh from a standout season with Western Sydney Wanderers, is vying for a spot in Australia’s squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Japan and Saudi Arabia.

Currently in the UAE at a national training camp, Milanovic is among the players under consideration as coach Tony Popovic prepares to name his squad this Sunday for matches in Perth and Jeddah. The young talent remains determined, confident in his ability to break into the national team.

“It’s just about trusting yourself and backing your own ability,” Milanovic said. “I’ve done that all season and had my doubters and tried to prove people wrong. Now, I’m with the big boys of Australia, with some great players here, and I want to put my best foot forward and show that I’m good enough to be here.”

His ultimate ambition is clear: to participate in the World Cup. “That’s a major goal of mine. That’s the No.1 long-term goal that I’ve had for a few years now, and I’m chipping away at it,” he added.

Earlier this month, Milanovic took a significant step in his career by signing with Aberdeen, a Scottish Premiership club. The move overseas is a dream many young players aspire to, but Milanovic chose to prove himself in the A-League first, aiming to elevate his game before making the leap.

“I wanted to be the best in the league before I went,” he explained, underscoring his dedication to reaching the highest levels of the sport. If the Socceroos qualify for next year’s World Cup, Milanovic’s performances for Aberdeen will be crucial in maintaining his place on the international stage.
