Heavy overnight rainfall has once again drenched parts of outback Queensland, offering no relief to regions already battling widespread flooding.
Floodwaters continue to impact the north and central west of the state after intense storms struck areas between Richmond and Hughenden, north of Julia Creek, and further south around Winton.
Winton Shire Mayor Cathy White said low‑lying properties had been sandbagged, while swift‑water rescue crews and SES teams from Rockhampton and Gladstone have been deployed for the week. Water has surrounded the western side of Winton, cutting off several roads, though the eastern route between Longreach and Winton reopened on Saturday afternoon.
“We may not open roads for a couple of days … but it’s an evolving beast, every day it’s something different. As soon as those roads are passable and safe, they’ll be open,” Cr White said.
Among those stranded is Sam Gould, who was travelling home to Darwin after spending the holidays in Hervey Bay. Instead, she has been stuck in Winton for six days.
“We’ve been pretty lucky there’s about 12 of us trying to get back to Darwin or Mount Isa,” she said.
