France’s environment minister has issued a stark warning after a summer marked by relentless heatwaves and devastating wildfires, describing the season as a preview of the harsher climate conditions to come.
Large parts of Europe have endured deadly heat, severe drought, and vast forest fires in recent months, while global temperature records have tumbled. Speaking at a press conference, Minister for Ecological Transition Agnès Pannier-Runacher called the summer of 2025 “a turning point,” noting that climate change is driving more frequent and more intense heatwaves.
“This is, unfortunately, a taste of what’s ahead,” she said, urging the public and policymakers to prepare for a future where extreme heat becomes the norm.
According to national weather data, 2025 was France’s third hottest summer since records began in 1900 and ranked second for the number of heatwave days. The season also brought catastrophic wildfires, including one in the Mediterranean region that officials say was the most destructive in at least 50 years, based on the area burned.
