France Stresses No Alternative to Two-State Solution at UN Conference

1 min read

France reaffirmed there is “no alternative” to a two-state solution between Israelis and Palestinians during a UN conference co-chaired with Saudi Arabia on Monday. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot emphasized that only a political resolution creating separate states will address the legitimate aspirations of both peoples to live in peace and security.

The three-day meeting comes days after French President Emmanuel Macron announced plans to formally recognize a State of Palestine in September. Barrot also indicated that several European countries are expected to confirm their intention to recognize Palestine during the conference, though he did not specify which ones.

Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa called on the international community to act swiftly, urging recognition of Palestinian statehood and proposing the deployment of an international force to support Palestinian independence. “Recognize the state of Palestine without delay,” he urged.

France is hopeful that Britain will also recognize Palestine. While more than 200 British Members of Parliament expressed support for recognition last Friday, Prime Minister Keir Starmer indicated that such recognition should be part of a broader, comprehensive plan for peace.
