France Bolsters Ukraine’s Air Defense with Mirage 2000-5 Jets

In a significant boost to Ukraine’s defense capabilities, France has delivered its first consignment of Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets, aimed at strengthening Kyiv’s airspace against Russian aggression. Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced the arrival of the aircraft on Thursday, though he did not disclose the exact number delivered.

This delivery follows months of training for Ukrainian pilots facilitated by France, as part of a broader military cooperation initiative. Lecornu emphasized the importance of these jets in enhancing Ukraine’s aerial defense, stating, “They will now help defend Ukraine’s skies.”

The transfer of these aircraft was first announced by President Emmanuel Macron last June, promising support to Ukraine amidst its ongoing conflict. France’s National Assembly budget report indicated that six of the 26 Mirage 2000-5 jets in the French air force would be sent to Ukraine, although the French defense ministry has not confirmed this number for security reasons.

Ukrainian pilots and mechanics have undergone specialized training in eastern France to operate the jets, which have been modified to counter Russian electronic warfare tactics, including jamming.

The delivery comes at a time when discussions of a negotiated settlement to the nearly three-year conflict are resurfacing, particularly with the prospect of Donald Trump returning to the White House. Meanwhile, Ukraine continues to face challenges on the battlefield, especially in the eastern regions, despite recently receiving its first batch of U.S.-made F-16 fighter jets in August.
