A four-vehicle collision on the Bowen Bridge at Ridson, north of Hobart, on Friday afternoon claimed the lives of an elderly man and lady, both in their 80s.

The two were heading east in a silver Holden Barina when, according to Tasmania Police, they were struck by a truck that was following them at approximately 3:40 p.m.

The Barina collided with two other cars that were travelling eastward as well: a blue Honda HRV and a red Holden Commodore.

Several people were also injured, police said.

The bridge was closed in both directions, and police and emergency services remain at the scene.

“The circumstances leading up to the crash are being investigated by police and a report will be prepared for the Coroner,” Tasmania Police said.

“Our thoughts are with everyone involved.”

Investigations are ongoing, and police urge anyone with relevant information or dashcam footage to contact Crime Stoppers.
