Four French Councillors of Bangladeshi Origin Elected, Marking a New Milestone for the Community

2 min read

Four candidates of Bangladeshi origin have been elected as councillors in France’s latest municipal elections, with their victories confirmed after the second round of voting on March 22. The achievement is being hailed as a significant milestone for the Bangladeshi community’s growing presence and influence in mainstream French politics.

Among the winners is young cricketer Zubayed Ahmed, who secured a council seat in Ivry‑sur‑Seine for the first time. He contested under the left‑leaning Front Populaire coalition and emerged victorious. Although several other Bangladeshi‑origin candidates participated in the elections, no additional wins were recorded according to the latest updates.

Political analysts say the success goes far beyond individual accomplishment. It reflects the rising social and political strength of the Bangladeshi diaspora in France a development that could shape future participation at the national level. Increased engagement at the local tier, they argue, often lays the groundwork for broader political influence.

This year’s municipal elections also revealed shifting political dynamics across France. While left‑wing parties managed to retain control in major cities, right‑wing and far‑right groups made noticeable gains in several regions. Analysts believe these trends point to a changing political landscape and new equations in French politics.
