A former Greens candidate was hospitalized following an arrest during a pro-Palestinian demonstration in Sydney’s south-west on Friday morning.

The incident unfolded outside SEC Plating in Belmore, where protesters alley that the company supplies components used in jets operated by the Israeli Defence Force. Police attempted to disperse the crowd, claiming the gathering was unauthorised.

During the arrest, the 35-year-old woman, identified as Hannah Thomas who previously challenged Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for the federal seat of Grayndler suffered facial injuries and was taken to Bankstown Hospital for treatment, police confirmed.

A video filmed at the scene shows a scuffle between police and protesters, with some shouting, “Let go of her.” In the footage, a woman wearing a black coat is led away from the group, falling to the ground as a police officer holds her. Police can be heard instructing her to get up, to which she responds, “I’m trying.”

A photo taken after the incident shows Ms Thomas standing beside an officer with a swollen eye. The protest and subsequent arrest have sparked further debate over the police response to demonstrations supporting Palestine.
