Phil Foden has acknowledged that Manchester City’s quest for a fifth consecutive Premier League title is effectively over following a disappointing 2-2 draw against Brentford. Despite Foden’s two goals that initially put City in control, the champions faltered late in the match, allowing Yoane Wissa and Christian Norgaard to secure a point for the home side.
Now sitting sixth and 12 points adrift of league leaders Liverpool, Foden emphasized the need for the team to shift their focus to securing a top-four finish rather than clinging to title hopes. “The title? Yeah, yeah, it’s done for sure, it’s done,” he admitted, reflecting on the team’s struggles.
“We’re not stupid. We’ve got to aim for top four; that’s the next target now, along with the Champions League. The season isn’t over, but we must be realistic. Our performances haven’t been good enough to stay up there.”
With City just two points behind fourth-placed Chelsea in the race for Champions League qualification, Foden stressed the importance of learning from their recent decline—a stark contrast to their previous dominance, having won six titles in seven seasons.
“This is a learning curve,” he said. “It’s about how we get back to our best—not just for me, but for the team as well. We need to bounce back from this.”
As City prepares to face struggling Ipswich on Sunday, they also have a critical Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain on January 22, with their place in the knockout stages still uncertain.
