Water levels in the Muhuri and Silonia rivers in Feni have surged past danger thresholds, with the Muhuri River exceeding 32 centimeters and the Silonia River surpassing 81 centimeters. Experts believe that the water levels may remain stable over the next 24 hours, potentially preventing further flooding in the district.
According to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre, a division of the Water Development Board, recent heavy rainfall has impacted the coastal and eastern regions, including Chittagong, Khulna, and Barisal divisions. A low-pressure system lingered over the northwest Bay of Bengal, increasing the likelihood of intense rainfall in the area over the next day.
The board’s latest update indicates that the Muhuri and Silonia rivers are flowing above their respective danger levels as of this evening. Despite this, the water levels are expected to stabilize within the next 24 hours, which could help ease the flood situation. Heavy rainfall is forecasted across the region, with moderate to heavy showers likely over the coming days, raising concerns about rising water levels in the Halda River and adjacent low-lying areas in Chittagong. These areas could experience flooding, which may subside in the subsequent days.
The Water Development Board reports that water levels in the Feni, Sangu, and Gomti rivers in the Chittagong division are rising. Meanwhile, the Matamuhuri River’s water level is decreasing. Over the next 24 hours, the Gomti River may see increased flow, while levels in the Sangu and Matamuhuri rivers could decline. In the Sylhet division, the Manu, Dhalai, and Khowai rivers are experiencing rising water levels, with potential increases over the next day. However, levels in these rivers are expected to stabilize over the following two days, easing flood concerns in the region.
