Flooding Traps Residents and Washes Away Homes in Southern New Mexico

Monsoon rains have unleashed severe flooding in a mountain village in southern New Mexico, trapping residents, homes, and vehicles. The flooding has caused widespread chaos in the Ruidoso area, prompting emergency crews to conduct at least 85 swift water rescues on Tuesday, according to Danielle Silva from the New Mexico Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries or fatalities so far. However, Silva warned that the full extent of the destruction would only become clear once the floodwaters recede. Authorities urged residents to move to higher ground as the Rio Ruidoso surged nearly 2.7 meters in just minutes amid heavy rainfall.

The National Weather Service issued flood warnings for the region, which has been left more vulnerable due to recent wildfires that stripped away much of the surrounding vegetation. In a disturbing update on its website at 3:30 p.m., the NWS reported footage showing a house floating down a river, illustrating the severity of the flooding.
