Flood Crisis in Beijing Turns into Humanitarian Emergency

1 min read

A severe flood caused by heavy rainfall in Beijing has escalated into a humanitarian disaster. At least 30 people have lost their lives, most of whom are from mountainous northern regions. In response to the catastrophe, more than 200 residents have been evacuated to safe locations.

Government sources confirmed that the fatalities have been recorded up to midnight on Monday. According to Xinhua News Agency, 28 deaths occurred in Mi Yun County, while Yanqing County reported two deaths.

There are fears of even heavier rainfall starting from early morning, with forecasts predicting up to 300 millimeters or nearly 12 inches of rain in some areas. The Mi Yun Reservoir, built in 1959, has now reached its maximum water holding capacity and has begun releasing water. Authorities have warned that river levels in low-lying areas are rising rapidly and that additional heavy rain could worsen the situation.

President Xi Jinping has issued urgent orders to intensify rescue and relief efforts. Meanwhile, residents have been advised to stay indoors as authorities work to manage the crisis and prevent further damage.
