A sudden flash flood triggered by just one hour of torrential rain has caused severe destruction in Morocco’s Safi province. At least 21 people were killed and 32 others injured, most of whom have since been discharged from hospital.

The disaster struck on Sunday, with Safi city located about 330 kilometers from the capital Rabat at the epicenter. Officials said rain began early in the morning and intensified into a heavy downpour by midday, lasting for more than an hour. During that time, widespread damage occurred.

Nearly 70 homes and shops were either partially or completely destroyed. Road networks were badly affected, leaving Safi paralyzed in gridlock for hours. Conditions improved slightly by evening as floodwaters began to recede.

The tragedy comes against the backdrop of nearly seven years of continuous drought across many regions of Morocco, making the sudden flooding even more devastating for local communities.
