Five Israeli soldiers lost their lives in combat in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, marking one of the deadliest days for Israeli forces in the Palestinian territory this year. The Israeli military reported that the soldiers, aged between 20 and 28, fell during intense fighting in northern Gaza.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed grief over the casualties, calling it a “difficult morning” as he visited Washington for talks with US President Donald Trump, who is urging a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict that has lasted more than 21 months.
“All of Israel bows its head and mourns the fall of our heroic soldiers, who risked their lives in the battle to defeat Hamas and free all our hostages,” Netanyahu posted on X.
The military stated that two other soldiers were severely wounded and evacuated to a hospital for treatment, with their families notified. Reports from Israeli military correspondents indicated that the soldiers died when improvised explosive devices detonated in Beit Hanun, in northern Gaza.
During efforts to evacuate the wounded, soldiers reportedly came under fire. Hamas’s armed wing spokesman, Abu Obeida, claimed responsibility, stating that “the complex Beit Hanun operation is yet another blow delivered by our valiant fighters.”
