Fernandes’ Last-Gasp Penalty Eases Pressure on Under-Fire Amorim

2 min read

Bruno Fernandes held Manchester United’s fate and perhaps Ruben Amorim’s job in his hands deep into stoppage time at Old Trafford on Saturday. In the seventh added minute, with the score locked at 2-2 against Burnley, the captain stepped up to the penalty spot. Amorim, unable to watch, leaned back in his dugout seat, crossed his feet on the wall, and stared at the sky. Moments later, Fernandes calmly slotted the ball into the corner, sealing a dramatic 3-2 victory.

For Amorim, it was a much-needed reprieve after a turbulent week. Just days earlier, United had suffered a humiliating League Cup exit to fourth-tier Grimsby Town, prompting the manager to publicly criticise his players and hint at discussions over his future. The win over Burnley may have bought him time, but questions over his ability to restore United to former glories remain.

“We should have won in a different way we should not suffer,” Amorim admitted after the match. The suffering had been real: United twice took the lead against a side tipped for relegation, only to be pegged back each time.

The decisive moment came when Amad Diallo was pulled back by Jaidon Anthony as he surged into the box. Initially waved away by referee Sam Barrott, the incident was reviewed on video, and the decision was overturned. Fernandes made no mistake from the spot, sparking relief and celebration among the home fans.

It was United’s first league win of the season, following a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal and a 1-1 draw at Fulham. For Amorim, it was also a small step away from the brink though the international break may yet bring further scrutiny. For now, the late drama has given him breathing space, and perhaps the momentum he desperately needs.
