A tragic accident involving three vehicles has resulted in one man’s death and caused a major highway in southern New South Wales to remain closed for over five hours. The crash occurred shortly before midday on Friday on the Sturt Highway at Tarcutta, approximately 50 kilometers northeast of Wagga Wagga.

Emergency services responded quickly after reports of a collision between two trucks and an SUV. NSW Ambulance confirmed that the male driver of the SUV was trapped at the scene and later pronounced dead.

Three other male patients were treated at the scene. The 31-year-old driver of one of the B-Double trucks sustained minor rib injuries and was taken to Wagga Base Hospital. His passenger, a man in his 30s, suffered leg and back injuries and was transported to hospital in a serious but stable condition. A 25-year-old man, the driver of the other B-Double carrying hay, received treatment for minor hand injuries at the scene.

Police said both truck drivers, aged 25 and 31, will undergo mandatory drug and alcohol testing. Fire and Rescue NSW attended to the scene to contain a large diesel leak caused by the crash, ensuring safety amid the incident.

The police investigation is ongoing, with assistance from the Crash Investigation Unit. The Sturt Highway was shut between Tumbarumba Road and the Hume Highway, disrupting traffic for more than five hours. This marked the third major inland NSW highway closure within 24 hours, following closures on the New England and Newell Highways.

A report will be prepared for the coroner to determine further details surrounding the incident.
