A devastating crash involving a truck and three cars on South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula has left two women dead and seven others injured, some critically. The collision occurred on Main South Road at Wattle Flat, about 70 km south of Adelaide, shortly after midday on Monday.
The accident involved a black Ford sedan, a silver Ford sedan, and a white ute, along with a truck reportedly en route to Adelaide after collecting waste from a local tip. Tragically, two women in the silver Ford, who were rear passengers, lost their lives. A 44-year-old woman died at the scene, while another woman succumbed to her injuries later in the hospital.
The driver of the silver Ford, a 43-year-old man, remains in critical condition, and a 14-year-old boy, also a passenger, sustained minor injuries. The ute’s driver, a 48-year-old man, is hospitalized in serious condition. Meanwhile, the driver of the black Ford, a 38-year-old woman, along with her two passengers—a 45-year-old man and a 10-year-old girl—suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The truck driver, a 35-year-old man, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and subsequently arrested. He now faces charges including two counts of causing death by dangerous driving, along with several counts of causing serious and non-serious harm by dangerous driving.
SA Police’s Major Crash officers spent the afternoon investigating the scene, with a 10 km section of Main South Road closed between Pyne Hill Road and Forktree Road in Myponga until at least 11 pm. Authorities have set up diversions and urge motorists to avoid the area.
This tragedy follows another near-miss on the same road involving a truck attempting to avoid a collision with a four-wheel-drive, underscoring ongoing safety concerns in the region.
