A farm worker has died after being injured during a raid by U.S. immigration agents at a legal cannabis farm in California, according to his family. The incident occurred on Thursday during a widespread operation that resulted in the arrest of around 200 undocumented migrants, part of broader immigration enforcement efforts under President Donald Trump’s administration, which has been marked by aggressive deportation policies.
The raid, which took place in Ventura County about 56 miles from Los Angeles, was marked by chaos and clashes between law enforcement and protesters. The family of the worker, identified as Jaime, launched a GoFundMe page to support his relatives in Mexico. On Saturday, the page announced that Jaime had “passed away.”
According to the family, Jaime was chased by ICE agents during the raid, and he fell approximately 30 feet (9 meters) from a height during the chaos. The fundraiser page described his injuries as “catastrophic.”
Tricia McLaughlin, a spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), stated that Jaime was never in custody at any point, indicating that he was injured during the encounter but not detained by ICE.
President Trump, known for his stern anti-immigration stance, campaigned on harsh policies, often describing undocumented migrants in derogatory terms. Since taking office, he has carried out large-scale deportation drives and recently called demonstrators involved in attacks on ICE agents “slimeballs,” urging their arrest.
This tragic incident highlights the tense and often dangerous confrontations surrounding immigration enforcement in the United States, especially in the context of the ongoing crackdowns.
