Recent storms have shattered more than 50 years of rainfall records along parts of Australia’s east coast, accompanied by winds comparable to those experienced during ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred. The Bureau of Meteorology warned on Monday that the region would face heavy rain and strong winds throughout the coming week.
Some meteorologists, outside of the bureau, expressed concerns that the low-pressure system could develop into an east coast low a highly dangerous weather phenomenon. If it had occurred, it would have been the first east coast low in three years.
The Bureau described the system as a “vigorous coastal low-pressure system” that is bringing intense rainfall and powerful winds. University of Melbourne climatologist Linden Ashcroft noted that while such weather systems are typical in eastern Australia, they can have devastating consequences when conditions align just right.
