A powerful drone packed with explosives struck Ramon Airport in southern Israel’s Eilat region on Sunday, shaking the facility and sending shockwaves through the surrounding area. The attack was claimed by Yemen’s armed Houthi movement, which has intensified its aerial assaults in recent days.
Unusually, no warning sirens were triggered during the incident a standard protocol when drones or missiles enter Israeli airspace. The military has launched an investigation to determine why the alert system failed and how the drone managed to evade air defenses.
Following the strike, Israel closed the airspace over the airport and nearby areas. Emergency services reported that two people were injured one hit by debris from the drone, and another who fell ill from shock. Later, authorities confirmed that several more people sustained injuries and were receiving treatment.
The drone hit the passenger terminal, sparking panic among travelers inside. Witnesses described scenes of confusion as people scrambled for safety.
The attack comes just days after Israel killed the Houthi government’s prime minister and 12 ministers in an airstrike. The Houthis had vowed retaliation, and since then, they have launched near-daily drone attacks toward Israel.
Military officials say they are now working to assess vulnerabilities in the country’s defense systems as tensions in the region continue to escalate.
