Exmouth famous for its turquoise waters, coral reefs and rich marine life is now being described as resembling a war zone after Tropical Cyclone Narelle tore through Western Australia’s northern coast.
The category‑four system smashed into the region with wind gusts reaching 250 kilometres an hour, passing almost directly over the coastal town located about 1,200 kilometres north of Perth. The impact was immediate and severe: power and water supplies were cut, and the local airport was “obliterated,” according to Shire President Matthew Niikkula.
Floodwaters have also cut the only sealed road into Exmouth, effectively isolating the community as emergency crews work to restore essential services.
Roofs have been ripped from homes and businesses, the town’s marina has suffered extensive damage, and even the cyclone‑rated evacuation centre where around 40 people sheltered on Thursday night had part of its roof peeled away by the ferocious winds.
As recovery efforts begin, residents and authorities are confronting the scale of destruction left behind by one of the most powerful cyclones to hit the region in years.
