European Union leaders have agreed to provide a massive €90 billion interest‑free loan to Ukraine to support its military and economic needs over the 2026–27 period, EU Council President Antonio Costa announced on Friday.
Costa confirmed the breakthrough in a social media post, writing: “We have a deal. Decision to provide €90 billion of support to Ukraine for 2026–27 approved. We committed, we delivered.” He did not specify how the funds would be raised.
Belgium Sought Assurances
The agreement came after lengthy late‑night negotiations on Thursday, during which EU leaders worked to reassure Belgium that it would receive guarantees against potential Russian retaliation for backing the loan package.
The financial commitment marks one of the EU’s largest long‑term support measures for Ukraine as the country continues to face military and economic pressure from Russia’s ongoing aggression.
