Emma Thompson shared a bizarre and unexpected moment from her past during a career Q&A at the Locarno Film Festival. While filming Primary Colors in 1998, she received a phone call in her trailer from Donald Trump.
Thompson said she initially thought the call was a prank. “He said, ‘Hello, this is Donald Trump,’ and I thought, surely someone’s joking,” she recalled. But the call was real. Trump invited her to stay at one of his properties and suggested they have dinner.
The timing struck her as suspicious. Her divorce from Kenneth Branagh had just been finalized that day, and Trump had also recently separated from Marla Maples. “I bet he had people looking for a nice divorcee to take out on his arm,” she said. “And he found the number in my trailer. That’s stalking.”
Thompson laughed as she shared the story, joking that had she accepted the invitation, she might have altered the course of American history. The anecdote added a surreal twist to her appearance at the festival, where she was honored with the Leopard Club Award for her career achievements.
