Elon Musk Says SpaceX Can Build a “Self‑Growing City” on the Moon Within a Decade

Elon Musk has unveiled a bold new chapter in SpaceX’s ambitions, declaring that the company is now prioritising the creation of a “self‑growing city” on the Moon a project he believes could be completed in under 10 years.

The billionaire entrepreneur shared the update on Sunday, signalling a strategic shift in SpaceX’s long‑term vision for human expansion beyond Earth. Musk argued that establishing a sustainable lunar settlement is the fastest way to secure the future of civilisation.

He added that SpaceX still intends to pursue its long‑promised Mars mission, saying the company will “strive to build a Mars city” and begin work within 5 to 7 years. But for now, he said, the Moon offers a quicker and more achievable path toward humanity becoming a multi‑planetary species.

Musk’s timeline is far more aggressive than those proposed by most space agencies, yet it aligns with his long‑standing belief that humanity must spread beyond Earth to survive existential threats. SpaceX continues to test its Starship spacecraft the vehicle Musk says will carry the infrastructure needed for both lunar and Martian cities.

Whether the vision is realistic remains a matter of debate, but Musk’s announcement underscores his determination to push the boundaries of space exploration and redefine what is possible.
