Elon Musk Launches New Political Party Amid Tensions with Donald Trump

2 min read

The strained relationship between Donald Trump and his former major campaign supporter, Elon Musk, has taken another sharp turn as Musk announced the formation of a new political party.

Just a day after polling his followers on his X platform about creating a new party, Musk revealed on Saturday, “Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.” He emphasized that the decision was driven by overwhelming public support, stating, “By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!”

Musk, known for his Tesla electric vehicles and SpaceX space ventures, has historically opposed some of Trump’s policies. He fiercely condemned a recent bill, claiming it would bankrupt America, and spent hundreds of millions supporting Trump’s 2020 election campaign. He also led efforts to reduce government spending through the Department of Government Efficiency, which was launched at the start of Trump’s second term.

However, their alliance has since unraveled. Musk and Trump fell out spectacularly over disagreements related to the bill, with Musk now pushing for a new political movement aimed at challenging congressional support for Trump’s policies. Previously, Musk announced plans to spend money to unseat members of Congress who backed the bill.

Adding to the tension, Trump recently threatened to withdraw billions in subsidies that Musk’s companies receive from the federal government, further straining their relationship.

This feud has raised concerns among Republicans, who worry that Musk’s unpredictable stance and public disputes with Trump could harm their efforts to maintain control of Congress in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections.
