The Election Commission has reinstated the candidacies of 18 previously rejected aspirants and upheld the nominations of four others, including BNP candidate Sabira Sultana for Jashore 2, ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary Election scheduled for February 12.

Acting as the electoral appeal tribunal, the Commission reviewed 43 petitions challenging decisions made by returning officers on the acceptance or cancellation of nomination papers. Seventeen rejected candidates failed to regain their place in the race after their appeals were dismissed.

Four petitions remain pending, involving two BNP aspirants from Sherpur 2 and Sirajganj 6, a Jamaat candidate from Jashore 2 and an independent aspirant from Chattogram 8. These cases will be settled over the weekend.

Chaired by Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin, the Commission resolved 39 petitions on Friday. With the latest decisions, a total of 353 candidates have been reinstated since hearings began on January 10. The tribunal has so far heard around 500 of the 645 appeals filed by individuals contesting returning officers’ decisions.

Among the candidates whose nominations were upheld, the Commission confirmed Sabira Sultana’s candidacy by rejecting an appeal from independent contender Jahurul Islam. It also maintained the candidacy of independent Arif Ul Islam Mridha in Narsingdi 3, dismissing a petition filed by BNP nominee Monjur Elahi.

The appeals of Mohammad Fahim Chowdhury and Mohammad Mosleh Uddin will be decided on Saturday, while the cases of Shafiqul Islam and Azad Chowdhury are set for Sunday, the final day of hearings.
