The Election Commission’s NID Wing has announced that currently, no one in the country holds dual national identity cards, and the NID database is now fully secure. ASM Humayun Kabir, the Director General of the NID Wing, made this assurance on Monday during a briefing at Nirbachan Bhaban in Dhaka.

He revealed that the commission has identified 586 individuals with two NIDs. “We have deactivated their second NIDs and activated their original ones,” he explained. The affected individuals now have access to all citizen services through their valid NID, with both duplicate NIDs locked.

Humayun Kabir noted that the decision to address the dual NID issue was taken in the first week of this month, and the problem was resolved within two weeks. “As of now, to our knowledge, no one has more than one NID. If any future cases are detected, we will take the same action,” he added.

The NID database, which contains information of over 125 million citizens, has experienced data leak incidents in the past. However, the DG assured that all necessary security measures have been implemented to prevent any data breaches under current conditions.

He explained that the data center operates round the clock, with brief shutdowns only for maintenance such as the four-hour shutdown last Saturday. The EC conducts regular inspections and updates to ensure the system’s proper functioning.

“We have taken all necessary steps to safeguard the data. At this moment, our data center is completely secure,” Humayun Kabir emphasized. He also assured that the daily operations continue smoothly, with strict measures to prevent any data leakage or damage.

Looking ahead, he affirmed that the EC will continue to implement all possible measures to maintain the security and integrity of the national ID database.
