Election Commission Approves Draft of 2025 Parliamentary Election Code of Conduct, Bans Posters

The Election Commission has given its preliminary approval to the draft of the Parliamentary Election Code of Conduct for 2025, which introduces several new regulations for political parties and candidates. Notably, the draft includes a ban on the use of posters in election campaigns.

While posters will be prohibited, candidates will still be permitted to carry out electioneering through billboards, banners, handbills, and social media platforms. Election Commissioner Brig Gen (retd) Abdul Fazal Md Sanaullah announced these details after a meeting at the Election Bhaban in Dhaka on Thursday.

He also clarified that candidates will be barred from conducting campaign activities on social media if they are funded by foreign sources.

The meeting, chaired by Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin, was held from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Chief Election Commissioner’s office.

Sanaullah added that the draft code was approved in principle after making several amendments to the existing rules. Regarding penalties, he stated that violators could face up to six months’ imprisonment and a fine of Tk 150,000 an increase from the previous penalty of six months’ imprisonment and a Tk 50,000 fine.
