In the United States, egg prices are soaring, reaching an all-time high. Currently, a dozen eggs is selling for $6.23, which translates to approximately 760 Bangladeshi Taka. This information comes from recent data released by the country’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The statistics reveal that the average price of a dozen eggs in March was $6.23, more than double the price from a year ago. Just last February, the price was $5.90 per dozen, and in January, it stood at $4.95. The current prices have surpassed all previous records. Although wholesale prices saw a slight decrease at the end of March, this change has not significantly impacted retail prices.
Last month, President Donald Trump stated that egg prices had dropped by 35% in the U.S., commending Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins for his efforts in reducing prices. However, experts believe that one of the primary reasons for rising egg prices is the outbreak of avian influenza. The country has been struggling with this crisis since 2022, and this year alone, there has been one reported death due to the infection. Farmers have had to cull over 30 million egg-laying hens, as government policy mandates that if even one bird in a farm tests positive, all birds on that farm must be euthanized. In light of the current situation, this rule has been somewhat relaxed.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has reported that no new outbreaks of avian influenza have been detected in the past two weeks. However, it will still take time for egg production systems to return to normal.
Avian influenza has not only affected birds but has also impacted dairy cattle. The widespread nature of the disease complicates control efforts and influences market dynamics.
