In a devastating maritime disaster, at least 22 Somali citizens lost their lives when two migrant boats capsized off the coast of Madagascar over the weekend, according to Somalia’s Information Minister Daud Aweis.
The ill-fated vessels had embarked on a perilous journey from Somalia to the French territory of Mayotte on November 2. Local fishermen discovered the first boat drifting near Nosy Iranja, rescuing 25 survivors, but sadly, seven occupants did not survive. A second boat with 38 people reached Madagascar’s Port du Cratère, where 23 were rescued, but the death toll from this vessel remains unconfirmed.
Minister Aweis reported that of the approximately 70 Somalis aboard the two boats, 22 perished. He condemned the organizers of this dangerous trip as criminals and warned potential migrants of the risks involved.
This tragic incident underscores the ongoing plight of those seeking better lives in Mayotte, which is perceived as a land of opportunity despite its associated dangers.
