A Ukrainian drone strike triggered a brief fire and partial shutdown at Russia’s Kursk Nuclear Power Plant early Sunday, following a reported detonation near the facility.
According to the plant’s press service, the drone was intercepted by air defense systems but exploded upon impact, damaging an auxiliary transformer. The blast led to a reduction in output from Unit Three, which was scaled down to 50 percent capacity.
No injuries were reported, and the fire caused by the explosion was quickly extinguished. Officials confirmed that radiation levels at the site and surrounding areas remain within normal limits.
While Ukraine has not issued a statement, Kyiv has previously described such cross-border strikes as retaliatory measures targeting infrastructure linked to Russia’s military operations.
The damaged transformer was not part of the plant’s nuclear section, and the exact location of the fire within the facility remains unclear.
