Doctors Protest in Shahbag: Demanding Increased Allowances

1 min read

In a striking turn of events, doctors have taken to the streets at Shahbag, driven by a pressing demand for increased allowances. Instead of being in their clinics, these medical professionals are rallying for change—so why this unexpected protest?

Since January, the doctors have been calling for a monthly allowance of 35,000 Taka. Although the government has promised to implement this allowance starting in July, the doctors remain resolute in their refusal to accept anything less than their demand. Dr. Nurunnabi, General Secretary of the Doctors Movement for Justice Society, revealed that the Ministry of Finance has requested a pause on the protest due to budget constraints. However, the doctors are standing firm.

They have expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to the public during their demonstrations. Previously, on December 22, they had staged a similar blockade, during which the government announced a 30,000 Taka allowance—an offer that the doctors swiftly rejected.

After a grueling 11-hour blockade, the postgraduate trainee doctors finally decided to leave Shahbag, announcing new plans for their movement at 10 PM. They remain committed to their cause, vowing to continue their protests until their demands are met.
