Docklands Stadium Boss Defends Pitch Quality Amid Entertainment Pivot

2 min read

The management of Docklands Stadium has assured fans and players that its shift toward hosting more entertainment events will not compromise the quality of pitches for Big Bash League (BBL) matches, even as the Melbourne Renegades consider their future at the venue.

Owned by the AFL, Docklands has been under scrutiny in recent summers, with only three cricket matches played there amid a packed schedule of concerts and other events. The Renegades’ current deal with the stadium expires at the end of this season, and former Australian captain Aaron Finch previously urged the club to move away after a win over the Perth Scorchers was marred by a patchy outfield caused by concerts and a graduation ceremony.

Kardinia Park in Geelong remains a possible alternative, having served as a secondary home since 2017.

Following sold-out shows for the Oasis tour, Docklands is set to host the AusX Supercross Championship and two Lady Gaga concerts before cricket resumes. Stadium officials noted that the grounds team will have four weeks to prepare the field before the Renegades’ first game on January 1 against the Sydney Sixers.

“By the time the Renegades get here, it’ll be great,” stadium general manager Scott Fitzgerald said Thursday, dismissing concerns about pitch quality.
