While Chamonix attracts about five million visitors annually and Verbier welcomes around a million, lesser known yet equally stunning Swiss resorts are quietly gaining recognition. Nestled among the Swiss peaks, Andermatt-Sedrun-Disentis offers a pristine alpine experience with a unique charm, boasting 180 kilometers of interconnected ski terrain.
This region is set to elevate its appeal further, with a substantial investment of 110 million Swiss francs (£89.5 million) in 2025. Led by Vail Resorts’ COO of mountain operations, Mike Goar, the upgrades will enhance snowmaking capabilities and mountain facilities, ensuring visitors enjoy even better skiing conditions.
But Andermatt-Sedrun-Disentis isn’t just for winter sports enthusiasts. In any season, you can ride the scenic Glacier Express train through the awe-inspiring Alps, embark on day hikes to the glacial Lago di Tom, or explore the Uri Alps on multi-day cycling adventures. The region retains a charming small-village vibe, complemented by world-class fondue and fewer crowds than its more famous Swiss counterparts.
For accommodation, the luxurious Chedi Andermatt provides convenient access to the slopes, while the upcoming Post Hotel & residences by fashion designer Elie Saab promises a stylish stay once it opens next ski season.
Best time to visit: This versatile destination is perfect year-round. Ski from December through April, enjoy hiking and cycling from June through September, and revel in spring blossoms and autumn foliage in between. Andermatt-Sedrun-Disentis invites travelers seeking an authentic, quieter Swiss alpine escape.
