Dhaka, a city long defined by relentless traffic jams, offered a rare sight of calm on Thursday as the Durga Puja holidays emptied its streets. With offices, schools and business hubs closed, the capital’s main roads were strikingly quiet, transforming the city of gridlock into one of relief if only briefly.
The holiday coincided with the weekend, creating a four-day break that left Dhaka’s normally congested streets almost deserted. Roads usually clogged with buses, cars and rickshaws fell silent, providing residents with an unusual glimpse of serenity.
An on-the-ground visit showed that, unlike on regular days, there was little pressure from public transport or private vehicles. However, the shortage of buses and other transport created difficulties for those who ventured out for urgent needs.
While the streets were empty, the metro rail remained operational and carried heavy passenger loads, highlighting its growing role as a vital mode of transport in the capital.
