In observance of Martyred Intellectuals’ Day, the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) at Dhaka University hosted a photo exhibition and a discussion titled “The Destruction of Intellectuals in 1971: The Wounds of History and Intellectual Reconstruction” on Saturday at the Payra Chattar of the Teachers and Students Centre (TSC).
The event commenced at 4 PM, featuring prominent speakers including Dr. Sukomal Barua, professor of Pali and Buddhist Studies; Prof. Dr. Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman, dean of the Faculty of Arts; Md Abul Kausar, associate professor of History; and JCD organizing secretary Md Amanullah Aman. The discussion was chaired by Ganesh Chandra Roy Sahas and moderated by JCD General Secretary Nahiduzzaman Shipon, with Dr. Barua serving as the chief guest.
Prof. Siddiqur Rahman paid tribute to the martyrs of 1971 and the intellectuals targeted during the Liberation War, stating, “Today, we remember those we lost and thank all who sacrificed their lives for our freedom.” He reflected on the historical context of the struggle, explaining how discrimination began in 1947 and culminated in the independence of Bangladesh in 1971.
He emphasized that the war was not only political but also a battle for the intellect, noting that intellectuals were among the first victims of the violence, especially on December 14, 1971.
Dr. Abul Kausar criticized the previous government for distorting historical narratives to maintain power. He argued for the importance of democratic practices in shaping historical accounts, asserting that the true voice of the people should guide history, not court verdicts.
Amanullah Aman raised concerns about the ongoing ambiguity surrounding the killings of intellectuals on December 14, 1971, suggesting a connection between historical violence and current political unrest.
Following the discussion, speakers and JCD leaders visited the accompanying photo exhibition at TSC, reflecting on the profound impact of the intellectuals lost during the Liberation War.
