On Monday, the Faculty of Fine Arts at Dhaka University celebrated Pahela Baishakh, the first day of the Bangla New Year, with the lively Anondo Shobhajatra, embracing a spirit of joy and unity. This year, the traditional procession has been renamed from “Mangal Shobhajatra” to “Borsho Boron Anondo Shobhajatra,” a change that has sparked debate among various groups.
The colorful event commenced at 9:00 AM from the Charukola premises, drawing participation from teachers, students, and individuals from diverse backgrounds.Among the striking motifs were the “Portrait of Fascism,” portraying the face of fallen Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, alongside a dove symbolizing peace. This year’s theme, “Symphony of the New Year, End of Fascism,” reflects the spirit of the July uprising and expresses solidarity with the people of Palestine.
The procession also showcased various ethnic communities, including Chakma, Marma, Santal, and Garo, highlighting Bangladesh’s rich cultural diversity. Notably, the national women’s football team joined in, adding to the festivities.
Pahela Baishakh is one of the most vibrant festivals in Bangladesh, symbolizing the welcome of the new year and the farewell to the old. It celebrates the unity and cultural richness of the nation, embraced by people from all walks of life, regardless of religion, class, or creed.
