1 min read

On the final day of Durga Puja, Dhaka’s mandaps were filled with crowds of devotees marking Vijaya Dashami a day of both farewell and festivity. The rituals began in the morning with anjali offerings, as worshippers gathered to bid farewell to Goddess Durga.

Despite cloudy skies and light rain on Thursday, devotees flocked to the mandaps to take part in the day’s ceremonies, including the bihit puja and darpon bisorjon. After the prayers, women placed vermilion on the goddess’s forehead before joyfully smearing sindoor on one another’s faces, wishing prosperity and well-being. The sound of drums, conch shells and ululations heightened the festive atmosphere.

Sindoor Khela was not limited to married women young girls and even children joined in, adding to the color and vibrancy. Many women believe the ritual brings blessings for their husbands, children and families, symbolizing happiness and longevity.

As evening fell, the immersion of idols marked the conclusion of this year’s Durga Puja. Devotees prayed for the goddess’s return next year, bringing renewed blessings and joy.
