Dhaka Medical College (DMC) has been announced closed for an indefinite period due to ongoing student protests protesting the deteriorating condition of its residential and academic buildings.
Students have been instructed to vacate their dormitories by 12:00 pm on Sunday, June 22, according to a notice signed by DMC Principal Professor Dr. Md Kamrul Alam. However, foreign students and those scheduled to take professional MBBS examinations are exempt from this order.
The decision was made during an emergency academic council meeting held on Saturday. The notice further stated that all academic activities for MBBS students will remain suspended until further notice.
For several weeks, students at DMC have been demonstrating against the poor condition of the campus infrastructure. On Friday, they submitted a memorandum containing five demands and staged a sit-in at Milon Chattar.
Among their main demands are arrangements for alternative accommodation for the dormitories declared abandoned, increased budget allocation for new dormitory and academic buildings, and the inclusion of student representatives in project planning to ensure transparency.
