Dhaka Gears Up for Amar Ekushey Book Fair with Enhanced Security Measures

2 min read

As the much-anticipated Amar Ekushey Book Fair prepares to open its doors on Saturday, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner SM Sazzat Ali announced a comprehensive security plan designed to ensure a peaceful and enjoyable experience for all attendees.

At a press briefing following an inspection of the venue at Bangla Academy and Suhrawardy Udyan, Commissioner Ali emphasized that robust security measures akin to those of previous years have been implemented. “We have taken stringent measures to guarantee the safety of the fair,” he stated.

To fortify security, the DMP has increased personnel deployment within the fairgrounds and surrounding areas, particularly around Dhaka University. A dedicated control room has been established to monitor security operations around the clock, with senior officers, including the deputy commissioner of the Ramna division, overseeing the arrangements.

In addition to police presence, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and various intelligence agencies have been enlisted to support the security efforts. The entire fair area will be under constant CCTV surveillance, and enhanced lighting will be in place at night to deter any potential incidents.

To ensure smooth traffic flow, Commissioner Ali announced that heavy vehicles will be prohibited in the Dhaka University vicinity throughout February. The road from Doyel Chattar to TSC will remain flexible, opening and closing based on the influx of book lovers.

For added convenience, book-feeding stations and lost-and-found centers have been set up at the fair. The police will promptly assist anyone who reports a lost item or child.

Addressing potential disruptions, the DMP chief urged all stakeholders to prevent hawkers from creating chaos by overcharging for food items. He also instructed the traffic department to implement necessary measures to facilitate seamless movement during the event.

With these rigorous preparations in place, Dhaka is ready to celebrate literature and culture at the Amar Ekushey Book Fair, inviting all to partake in this vibrant annual tradition.
