Developers overseeing a long-dormant project on a tropical Queensland island have requested more time to develop a new resort at a site abandoned for over a decade.
Avi Silver and Eddie Hirsch, owners of a nationwide chain of service stations, also hold the lease for part of Brampton Island in northern Queensland, a lease they have maintained since 2010. They are now asking for a five-year extension to complete the resort, which would replace the old accommodation damaged by Cyclone Anthony in 2011.
The developers aim to rebuild the site with new villas, a rock pool, and a yoga studio, as part of a boutique-style plan designed to host up to 30 guests. The initial approval for the project was granted in 2015, but progress has stalled over the years.
On Brampton Island, the remnants of the former resort remain, with the swimming pool filled with sand and some villas, dating back to the 1960s, in disrepair. The developers say the extension is necessary to continue negotiations with the Queensland government over several issues, including the reinstatement of a jetty that was removed in 2015 by Transport and Main Roads.
In a statement, Transport and Main Roads explained that the jetty was demolished after sustaining damage during Cyclone Dylan. They added that the resort owner at the time declined responsibility for the jetty or expressed willingness to manage its repair, leaving the issue unresolved.
A local MP has called for the council to reject the extension request, citing concerns about the long delay and the state of the site.
