A heartbreaking scene of natural disaster has unfolded in Uttar Pradesh, India, as a deadly combination of storms, heavy rain, and lightning struck the region on May 22. In just one day, the calamity claimed the lives of 45 people, casting a pall of grief across various districts of the state.
Vanu Chandra Goswami, the Relief Commissioner of Uttar Pradesh, reported that the tragedy affected at least 18 districts. The deceased include five each from Kashganj and Firozpur, four each from Meerut and Auraiya, three each from Bulandshahr, Kanpur Nagar, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Kanpur Dehat, and Eta, along with others from Gaziyabad, Etao, and other districts.
Officials from the Meteorological Department confirmed that many districts experienced intense seasonal storms during the day, with wind speeds reaching between 60 to 100 kilometers per hour. These powerful gusts triggered numerous fatalities, either through lightning strikes or collapsing roofs and structures.
The natural calamity has caused widespread destruction across the state, damaging homes, crops, and infrastructure. Emergency services and administration teams have launched rescue and relief operations to assist those affected.
This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the increasing frequency and severity of natural disasters and underscores the critical need for enhanced preparedness and resilience measures to protect communities from such devastating impacts.
