In the heart of Beit Lahia, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital paints a chilling picture of survival amid chaos. Hossam Abu Safiyeh has issued an urgent call to the international community, warning that Israeli forces continue to target the already beleaguered medical facility. “We are in an extremely dangerous and terrifying situation,” he stated, as relentless shelling transforms the hospital into a scene of dread.
Despite these alarming claims, an Israeli military spokesperson refutes any intention to strike the hospital, insisting, “I am unaware of any strikes on Kamal Adwan hospital.” Yet, the reality on the ground tells a different story. On Monday, the hospital, which currently cares for 91 patients, faced direct assaults from Israeli drones. “This morning, drones dropped bombs in the hospital’s courtyards and on its roof,” Safiyeh reported, revealing the harrowing circumstances that have unfolded.
The ongoing bombardment has wreaked havoc on the hospital’s infrastructure, with bullets piercing through critical areas like the intensive care unit, maternity ward, and specialized surgery department. “The shelling has caused fear among patients,” Safiyeh lamented, highlighting the psychological toll amid the physical destruction, including damage to their generator.
“The world must understand that our hospital is being targeted with the intent to kill and forcibly displace the people inside,” he emphasized. Every day, the threat looms larger, as the shelling escalates from all directions. “The situation is extremely critical and requires urgent international intervention before it is too late,” he urged.
In a troubling development, Safiyeh revealed he received orders to evacuate the hospital on Sunday, a claim the military denies. As one of only two hospitals still operational in northern Gaza, Kamal Adwan stands as a fragile lifeline amid an intense air and ground campaign aimed at dismantling Hamas in the region.
Since the conflict reignited on October 7, with Hamas’s attack resulting in over 1,200 casualties in Israel, the humanitarian crisis has intensified. The death toll in Gaza has surged to over 45,259, predominantly civilians, according to reports from the local health ministry. Human rights organizations continue to advocate for the protection of hospitals and the urgent delivery of medical supplies, emphasizing the dire need for aid amidst ongoing violence.
As the world watches this humanitarian catastrophe unfold, the call for action grows louder, echoing the desperate pleas of those striving to save lives in Gaza.
