In Australia, dementia is expected to surpass heart disease as the main cause of mortality due to an aging population and improvements in healthcare.
According to new data, there will only be 250 fatalities in 2023 that separate dementia from heart disease, making the distance between the two conditions closer than ever. as mortality from dementia, particularly Alzheimer’s, continued to rise to the top in the ensuing years. The number of dementia-related deaths in the nation has skyrocketed, increasing by 842 percent in the last 50 years.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports that dementia-related diseases, including Alzheimer’s, caused 16,685 deaths in the county, with 1608 occurring in Western Australia.
According to a state-by-state analysis, dementia was the leading cause of mortality in South Australia, the ACT, and NSW, but it was the second leading cause in Western Australia and the country as a whole. According to Dr. Kaele Stokes, executive director of advocacy and research for Dementia Australia Services, the statistics made it clear how important it was to consider strategies for concentrating on brain health.
“We are becoming more conscious that the number of people with dementia and those who are dying from dementia is still rising,” Dr. Stokes stated.
However, many individuals are unaware that there are a number of risk factors that may be changed, if we take.
Overall, more than 183,000 deaths were recorded in Australia in 2023, with the ABS declaring numbers had stabilised after the World Health Organisation announced the end of the global pandemic.
Despite that, COVID-19 remains in the top ten causes of death nationally with 5001 deaths recorded in 2023. Of those, 477 were recorded in WA.
