Deliberate Attack in Munich: Afghan National Faces Islamist Motive

2 min read

In a shocking incident in Munich, an Afghan national has confessed to intentionally driving into a crowd, injuring at least 36 people, including a child. Prosecutor Gabriele Tilmann announced on Friday that authorities are treating the attack as motivated by Islamist ideology.

The 24-year-old suspect, identified as Farhad Noori, targeted demonstrators in the city center on Thursday, raising security concerns just days before the upcoming federal election. “He has admitted that he deliberately drove into the participants of the demonstration,” Tilmann stated during a press conference.

While the prosecutor emphasized the need for caution in drawing conclusions, she indicated that the evidence thus far suggests a potential Islamist motivation behind the crime. Notably, the attack coincided with the arrival of international leaders, including US Vice President JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, for the Munich Security Conference.

Despite the serious nature of the incident, Tilmann clarified that there is currently no evidence linking Noori to any Islamist or terrorist organizations. Investigators are scrutinizing his communications and the items seized during searches to determine if anyone else had prior knowledge of the attack or was complicit.

Noori arrived in Germany as an unaccompanied minor in 2016 and has been living in the country legally, holding a work permit and without any prior convictions. As immigration and security issues dominate the political landscape ahead of the February 23 election, this incident adds to the heightened tensions surrounding public safety and national security. Polls indicate a lead for center-right conservatives, followed by far-right parties, reflecting growing concerns among voters.
